Why the Focus on Core Learning?
At Forest Dell Institute for Learning we focus on core learning and study skills to help our students learn how to learn. The simplified format of our program allows our teachers to really focus on our areas of expertise and create quality lessons and courses rather than trying to overstretch and provide many options at a mediocre quality. We want our students to have the opportunity to dive into core subjects and realize that learning really is fun, and we also help our students discover that they are much more capable learners than they ever realized. We teach math at each student’s ability level and fill in gaps with adaptive learning plans and direct teacher support. All students participate in multiple book studies each year, and they also write essays and research papers. Students learn to take notes and study for exams. We teach testing strategies, and we coach and guide students through the learning process. We provide opportunities for hands-on-learning with manipulatives, experiments, and field trips. We provide rigorous and engaging classes to prepare students for future learning and life experiences. We teach classes that some students may have avoided in other programs, and we offer support so that all students are able to succeed as long as they are willing to engage and try. Our teachers love learning and sharing that love of learning with others. We provide one course in science and one in social studies on a yearly rotating basis. The courses for the 2026-27 school year will be Math, Language Arts/English, Economics +Geography, and Physics. We will assess students for background knowledge and skill levels at the beginning of the school year and adjust our lesson plans based on the students. Don’t worry if your student hasn’t had intro to physical science. Our classes are adapted to meet our students where they are, then build from there.
